چکیده

The effectiveness of rate adaptation algorithms is an important determinant of 802.11 wireless network performance. The diversity of algorithms that has resulted from efforts to improve rate adaptation has introduced a new dimension of variability into 802.11 wireless networks, further complicating the already difficult task of understanding and debugging 802.11 performance. To assist with this task, in this paper we present and evaluate a methodology for accurately fingerprinting 802.11 rate adaptation algorithms. Our approach uses a Support Vector Machine (SVM)-based classifier that requires only simple passive measurements of 802.11 traffic. We demonstrate that careful conversion of raw packet traces into input features for SVM is necessary for achieving high classification accuracy. We tested our classifier on the four rate adaptation algorithms available in MadWifi, the most popular open source driver for commodity wireless cards. The classifier performs with an accuracy of 95%-100%. We also show that the classifier is robust over a variety of network conditions if the training data includes a sufficient sampling of the range of an algorithm’s behavior.

Throughput-based rate adaptation algorithm for IEEE 802.11 vehicle networks

Abstract: A key problem with IEEE 802.11 technology is adaptation of the transmission rates to the changing channel conditions, which is more challenging in vehicular networks. Although rate adaptation problem has been extensively studied for static residential and enterprise network scenarios, there is little work dedicated to the IEEE 802.11 rate adaptation in vehicular networks. Here, the au...

A Performance Evaluation for Rate Adaptation Algorithms in IEEE 802.11 Wireless Networks

The wireless LAN standards IEEE 802.11 (a/b/g) provides multi-rates capabilities. To achieve high network performance, devices need to adapt their transmission rate dynamically under varying conditions. Rate adaption algorithm is a critical component of their performance, only very a few algorithms have been published and the differences between their mechanisms have been publicly discussed. In...

Implementation and experimental study of rate adaptation algorithms in IEEE 802.11 wireless networks

Rate Adaptation is a critical component of IEEE 802.11 network devices. There are many rate adaptation algorithms proposed in the literature. They are either evaluated through simulations or through experiments only in static scenarios. We implement some of these algorithms (which are implementable) in Madwifi device driver and then compare their performance in static as well as mobile vehicula...

BEWARE: Background Traffic-Aware Rate Adaptation for IEEE 802.11 MAC

IEEE 802.11-based devices employ rate adaptation algorithms to dynamically switch data rates to accommodate the fluctuating wireless channel conditions. Many studies observed that, when there are other stations transmitting in the network, existing rate adaptation performance degrades significantly due to the inability of differentiating losses between wireless noise and contention collisions. ...

Enhanced statistics-based rate adaptation for 802.11 wireless networks

Rate adaptation is a common technique to exploit channel diversity in wireless networks. Despite the many rate adaptation algorithms proposed for 802.11 networks, statistics-based schemes remain the most widely adopted approaches in commercial 802.11 products due to their simplicity and practicality. However, statistics-based schemes suffer some disadvantages. Our previous research effort revea...
